Spring Clean Your Smile, prevent gum disease.

Posted Tuesday, April 1st, 2014

As the temperatures rise many of us kick it into high gear with our Spring cleaning tasks. Letting in some fresh air and getting rid of the dust and dirt that’s been gathering in our homes over the winter.

Since we’re both people AND dental professionals at Premier Dentistry of Philadelphia we wanted to take a moment to remind you that your smile might need a Spring cleaning too! If you’re due for your 6 month cleaning, if you have not had a dental exam in some time or if you have noticed any signs of early stages of gum disease (periodontitis) or gum inflation (gingivitis) it’s time to Spring clean that smile!

You may be surprised to know that, according to the American Dental Association 75-80% of adults have or will have some form of gum disease. Often, because gum disease can be painless, the problem is overlooked and can become severe, but because until the later stages there isn’t always pain associated with the issue, many don’t seek treatment. This is why those 6 month exams with your dentist are important, it’s much easier to prevent the issue with regular oral care and early detection.

Signs of gum disease:

  • Constant bad breath
  • Red, puffy, swollen gums
  • Gum bleeding during brushing
  • Receding gums – teeth appear ‘longer’
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Pus oozing from teeth and gums

If you notice any of these, see a dental professional. If you’re looking for a Philadelphia dentist, call us – shameless plug – 215-564-1025.

When these signs are present scaling is an option for treatment. Scaling is the process of removing tartar from the surfaces of teeth. It’s a non surgical way to treat gum disease (periodontitis) and a commonly recommended treatment when gum disease is mild but not severe. Thinks of scaling as a deep cleaning for your teeth, one that helps the gum disease from worsening. This is a procedure we offer and recommend at Premier Dentistry to treat mild periodontitis.

Once again, make sure when you start tidying up for Spring that you consider Spring cleaning your smile! Call your dentist today and schedule a cleaning and exam.
